Organized by the Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) associated with The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), this event responds to a disconnect often found between the knowledge produced in academic circles and the efforts of practitioners worldwide. There are few accessible ways for practitioners to stay engaged with emerging academic findings, and there are challenges for scholars to tailor their research to a local, applied context.
In this two-hour event, we will engage in dialogue and discussion around the opportunities and challenges for facilitating greater engagement between the realms of scholarship and practice – specifically on the theme of tropical restoration.
This event is brought to you by The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment with support from the Yale Forest Forum.
Content
The two-hour event will include three parts:
1. Panel discussion: This segment will feature YSE professors and ELTI affiliates representing a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and a range of experience working at the interface between science and practice. Speakers include:

- Alicia Calle, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Associate, Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (moderator)
- Zoraida Calle, MSc., Colombia Coordinator, Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative
- Oswald Schmitz, Ph.D., Professor, Yale School of the Environment
- Florencia Montagnini, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist, Yale School of the Environment
- Carol Carpenter, Ph.D., Professor, Yale School of the Environment
- Amy Vedder, Ph.D., Lecturer, Yale School of the Environment
2. In-depth discussion in small group “breakout rooms”: Led by YSE students and guest speakers, these small group discussions serve as a space for participants to share their experiences and perspectives
3. Introduction to the Tropical Restoration Library and other tools: This final part will feature tools for bridging the gap between scholarship and practice and include a brief demonstration of ELTI’s new Tropical Restoration Library (https://restoration.elti.yale.edu).
