Resource Description
Ecological approaches to forest restoration: Lessons learned from tropical wet Asia" is a book chapter of case studies on restoration approaches used in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The Philippine case study, by ELTI affiliates David Neidel and Joy Compendio and ELTI partners Marlito Bande and Paciencia Milan, discusses the development of native species reforestation (rainforestation) at Visayas State University. The Indonesia case study, by ELTI affiliates David Neidel and Arbainsyah and ELTI partner Ishak Yassir, describes methods the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation used in establishing Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan. One of the Sri Lanka case studies highlights research by ELTI Steering Committee member Mark Ashton and ELTI’s partners Nimal Gunatilleke and Savitri Gunatilleke on using fast-growing pine to facilitate transition to native broadleaf trees in the area around the Sinaraja Forest Reserve. The chapter is in Ecological Restoration: Moving Forward Using Lessons Learned (June 2023, Springer). Other chapter contributors include ELTI collaborators Stephen Elliott, Karen Holl, Robin Chazdon, and Rakan Zahawi.
