Field Workshops: Agroecological Restoration of Eroded Land
Summary
Two workshops on “Agroecological Restoration of Eroded Land” will be offered to community leaders, landowners, teachers, high school students, and team members of the regional environmental authority in Manizales, Colombia. All participants live or work in an area affected by an expanding 36-hectare gully, where large numbers of people have lost their lives and property.
Content
The workshops will begin with an introduction to the area’s geology and intrinsic vulnerability. This will be followed by presentations on the principles and methods for the ecological restoration of gullies and areas affected by landslides, and sustainable land use practices that prevent erosion and slope instability. The second half of each workshop will take place in the field, and will include an on-site analysis of causes and triggers of a recently formed gully, and an assisted natural regeneration exercise.
