Integrating Forest and Carbon Monitoring and Training in Tropical Landscape Conservation and Restoration Projects
Summary
Tropical and forested landscapes are among the most biodiverse and ecologically significant regions on the planet; however, they are highly threatened by deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. On-the-ground conservation and restoration efforts and programs often face challenges due to limited funding sources and difficulties conducting the data collection and monitoring activities needed to verify a project's success. Advancements in technology offer promising solutions to overcome these barriers.
The Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) seeks to build training materials on project monitoring and reporting, carbon markets, and these emerging technologies for conservation and restoration through this workshop. ELTI will bring together an interdisciplinary group of scientists and practitioners to share and enhance understand of different and emerging monitoring technologies, methods, and applications necessary to track and report on forest and carbon projects. Using the Yale Camp at Great Mountain Forest as a “living laboratory”, we will:
- Pilot a field experience at GMF for attendees to learn from, present, or demonstrate examples and case studies about various technologies and emerging applications to monitoring forest carbon projects.
- Create an environment for attendees to exchange expertise, network, and discuss bridging the gap between theory and practice with others about various and emerging technologies that are or could be applied to improve and make carbon and forest monitoring more accessible.
- Curate and generate information for new content to increase available material for the ELTI online and training programs about 1) monitoring applications and case studies used in tropical and forest restoration and conservation projects, and carbon market practices, policy, reporting, and funding opportunities.
This event is hosted by ELTI, with support from the Yale Planetary Solutions (YPS) Seed Grant Program.
Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and tea/coffee provided.
*Attendance of this event is by invitation only.
