Training on non-timber forest product utilization to support sustainable mangrove ecotourism in Kampung Baru
Summary
Kampung Baru Village is located in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. The village features a mangrove ecotourism site established in 2016, spanning an area of 60 hectares. This ecotourism destination offers mangrove trekking attractions with a route of approximately 800 meters. The ecotourism initiative is supported by the district government, the Department of Culture and Tourism, and managed by the Kelompok Sadar Wisata (Pokdarwis) or Ecotourism Awareness Group.
However, the ecotourism site has experienced a decline in visitors since the onset of COVID-19. The lack of both financial and human resources led to the deterioration and neglect of the mangrove trekking area. By the end of 2024, the Department of Culture and Tourism renovated the mangrove trekking area, and Pokdarwis began redeveloping the ecotourism site.
To support the redevelopment efforts in Kampung Baru, Blue Forests-ELTI has collaborated with Pokdarwis Kampung Baru to plan training sessions on developing non-timber forest products (NTFPs) from mangroves to support ecotourism activities. NTFP products from mangroves can serve as an additional business opportunity for Pokdarwis members and provide alternative livelihoods for the community.
