Forest Governance Research & Practice: Building Bridges through Capacity Building and Training

REDD+ and legality verification have emerged as the most recent in a long series of policy instruments aimed at curtailing deforestation and forest degradation in the tropics. With the previous mechanisms having proven largely unsuccessful, the research community is looking carefully to see what mistakes can be learned from the past in order to avoid similar pitfalls. While these studies have developed useful insights into the formation, evolution, and impact of international forest governance, a key challenge remains in determining how to translate these scholarly insights into durable and effective action that can unite an array of disparate interests to work together to promote forest conservation.

This workshop, organized by the International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO), Yale Program on Forest Policy and Governance, the Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI), and the National University of Singapore (NUS), was intended as a dialogue between the research community and on-the-ground practitioners to determine how best to move forward in turning research into practice through capacity building and training.
