This regional training is designed to compare and contrast different approaches to forest restoration, with the goal being to provide the participants with an array of different techniques depending on initial site conditions and management goals.

DAY 1. CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY

  • Introductions
  • Factors preventing forest recovery and ANR (accelerated natural regeneration)
  • The framework species method of forest restoration
  • Forest Restoration Research Units - need and implementation
  • Presentation: Reforestation around the region with native tree species
  • Assisted Natural Regeneration
  • Species selection - recognizing framework tree species. Species database demo
  • The importance of species identification - visit to CMU Herbarium

DAY 2. BAN MAE SA MAI

  • Framework species plot establishment and biodiversity recovery
  • Monitoring performance of planted trees
  • Surveying potential planting sites
  • Socio-economic and community aspects - discussion with village committee

DAY 3. DOI SUTHRP-PUI NATIONAL PARK

  • Design of a tree nursery for forest restoration
  • Phenology scoring exercise
  • Seed collection, S numbers, voucher specimens, wildling collection
  • Germination experiments - design and data collection
  • Preparing fig tree seeds
  • Containers, media, and pricking out
  • Seedling growth experiments
  • Care of containerized seedlings in the nursery
  • Working with wildlings
  • Production scheduling

DAY 4. DOI INTHANON NATIONAL PARK

  • Watershed Unit: methods to restore forests to watersheds
  • Restoration sites and checkdams
  • Eco-trek (land uses and wildlife habitats) to Pha Dhog Seaw Waterfall
  • Ecotourism project at Karen village, Baan Mae Klang Luang
  • Royal project: alternative livelihoods for protected are inhabitants
  • Kuhn Huay Haeng Research Centre: fruit trees, cut flower production, fisheries
