Training of Trainers on Mine Site Revegetation

ELTI, TBI, and PUSDIKLAT have joined forces to provide a training of trainers on mine site rehabilitation. Mining is a significant industry in Indonesia with millions of hectares having been issued as concessions. While mining yields significant economic benefits, it also results in wide-scale environmental degradation. In addition to the mine sites themselves being affected, downstream areas can also be impacted by toxic run-off, river sedimentation, landslides, and flash floods. Fortunately, government regulations call for the progressive rehabilitation of mined areas to mitigate these and other negative impacts. In general, however, there is little technical capacity to implement mine site rehabilitation on the scale needed. To address these kinds of problems, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment & Forestry maintains a total of seven Education and Training Centers (Balai Diklat) located in different parts of the country that are tasked with providing a variety of training programs for government, non-governmental, and private sector actors looking to upgrade their knowledge and skills, including in mine site rehabilitation. It is challenging, however, for the teaching staff from these Balai Diklat to remain up-to-date on scientific developments, policy changes, and new technical approaches to mine site rehabilitation. This training has been designed by ELTI, TBI and PUSDIKLAT to overcome this problem by enhancing the ability of 20 instructors from the Balai Diklat to lead trainings on mine site rehabilitation for relevant stakeholders throughout the country.
