Summary
ELTI has drawn upon their 10 years of capacity development experience in Panama to train a cadre of environmental leaders who will promote better land use practices in the La Villa River Watershed (LVRW). The LVRW is the most important watershed in Panama’s Azuero Peninsula, a dry tropical forest ecosystem dominated by conventional cattle ranching. In this region, conventional ranching practices contribute to water shortages, high levels of deforestation, soil degradation and water contamination. We will apply our Training-of-Trainers (TOT) model to develop the capacity of 30 local farmers and extension agents to establish and manage silvopastoral systems (SPS), build a network of model farms, monitor and evaluate progress and train others. The model farms will serve as innovation hubs where farmers and extension agents collaborate, learn and inspire others to replicate sustainable land management.
This project was made possible with generous support from the Conservation, Food &Health Foundation.
