Summary
Melisa Sanon serves as the Program Manager at Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti. She aspires to empower rural women by teaching them about sustainable agriculture and forest restoration practices. She is working to develop community-based projects that focus on meeting food security via agroforestry and reforestation. With this project, Melisa hopes to enhance the knowledge of rural women so that they can establish community based native species nurseries and agroforestry model farms.
This project facilitated three workshops in rural Haiti that focused on the importance of restoration with native tree species and the establishment of community-based tree nurseries and agroforestry systems. Workshops were offered to two women’s groups, with a total of 42 participants. The participants learned how to restore degraded agricultural lands, develop agroforestry systems that will improve food security and produce crafts to add value to their products for outside markets. ELTI provided financial support as well as regular technical assistance for developing the workshop and designing the nurseries and agroforestry systems.
