Jean Claude DUSABIMANA

Rwanda Affiliate, Nature Rwanda

Jean Claude DUSABIMANA grew up near Rwanda’s Twin Lakes in the Northern Province, where an early connection with nature shaped his passion for conservation and the relationship between people and ecosystems.

This interest led him to study Zoology and Conservation Biology, followed by a master’s degree in environmental economics and Natural Resources Management. Over the years, he has worked as an educator, an instructional video designer, and a conservation storyteller, using education and communication to connect people with environmental issues.

In 2016, driven by a desire to protect important habitats and overlooked species beyond Rwanda’s national parks, Jean Claude co-founded Nature Rwanda, a youth-led conservation organization working towards thriving communities in biodiverse and resilient landscapes. Today, as its Executive Director, he leads efforts that bring together scientific research, policy engagement, and community-led action to advance biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Beyond Nature Rwanda, he leads the East African Working Group within BirdLife International’s partnership network and has contributed to national and international environmental working groups, supporting initiatives in biodiversity planning, ecosystem restoration, conservation advocacy, and resource mobilization.

Jean Claude’s professional interests center on ecosystem service valuation and understanding how the ecological and economic values of nature can inform conservation and development decisions. He believes that lasting conservation depends on recognizing the close relationship between healthy ecosystems and human well-being.

Conservation is justice when people and nature thrive together."
